Latest ActionAid News: Four years on Tesco still stalling on South Africa women's farm pay. The actor James Purefoy, who met women workers in South Africa with ActionAid in May, said: “It’s outrageous that Tesco’s profits are topping £3 billion, when I met women in South Africa who were being paid £22 a week to pick the fruit that ends up on our supermarket shelves. As consumers shouldn’t we expect the people at the sharp end of the supply chain to be getting a better deal than that?.”

London Evening Standard: Burma Left Stranded: NO SIGN of any Westminster politicians at last night’s premiere of pro-democracy film Burma VJ at Bafta organised by the Co-operative and FilmAid International.

Vivienne Westwood gave a keynote speech condemning the junta’s “appalling human rights abuses” and the “hypocrisy of the British government”.

She highlighted former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw’s limp protest against the regime when he sacked diplomat Craig Murray, who provided evidence of the Burmese government’s use of torture on political prisoners.

The absence of politicans at the premiere outraged guests. Actor James Purefoy said: “If David Miliband or anyone from the Foreign Office were here, we needn’t be. We’d all be back on the stage, on the catwalk, wherever.”
